The Power of Prayer in Bible Study
When we approach the Bible, it’s easy to treat it purely as an intellectual exercise, reading chapter after chapter to acquire knowledge. But how important are prayer and meditation in truly studying and absorbing the scriptures?
According to Donna Marie Ennis in her book The Ground of God, prayer and meditation are absolutely essential. They are the vehicles that move scripture from the page directly into our hearts and actions. Ennis points out that “Contemplative prayer is most often grounded in reading a passage from the sacred scriptures.” This connection is built on the ancient practice of Lectio Divina (divine reading), which operates on the premise that our deepest prayers should be rooted in the Word of God.
Rather than rushing through large portions of text, combining Bible study with meditative prayer encourages us to slow down and reflect on a single verse or phrase. Ennis advises that “Repeated readings are beneficial, as the words and actions of faith represented in the sacred texts can have an increasingly profound effect on our whole being.” Through this deliberate, prayerful meditation, “the word of God is transferred visually from written word to thought, leading to insights into one’s life, guiding one toward silence in the blessed assurance of God’s presence (emphasis added).”
This process is not just about understanding history or theology; it is about profound spiritual conversion. By praying through our Bible study, “we move from one level of prayer to another. As we do we are transformed from the inside out.” Ultimately, this quiet reflection ensures that the scriptures do not remain abstract concepts, but rather, “Over a period of time, we find that we are truly living the Word of God from our hearts out in to our active lives.”
If you are looking to deepen your personal Bible study and bridge the gap between reading the Word and living it, I highly recommend using The Ground of God as a study companion. Its clear, practical guidance on combining contemplation with scripture reading makes it a beautiful and transformative resource for anyone seeking to engage with the Bible on a much deeper level.
